California Insurance Agent Courses - Requirements For License Renewal
California is one of the most active states for insurance sales in the country. This mainly due to it’s size. Fortunately for insurance agents in the state, it has relatively easy to fulfill requirement for continuing education. This article covers the bulk of those requirements.
There are several mediums that you can use to fulfill your continuing education requirements. These includes self study, which can be done either online or by video course. I would recommend online due to the cost, and ease. The second option is classroom study. While this is usually much more expensive and time consuming, some specialty courses require it.
Agents in the state of California must take courses related to the license they are applying for. One course that require special requisite is Partnership LTC. It requires you to take both 8 hours or Long-Term Care courses as well as 8 hours of Partnership LTC courses biannually. Unfortunately for new insurance agents, general Partnerhip LTC credits must be fulfilled every year for the first 4 years. The good news is that these special credits also count towards fulfilling the main credit hour requirements.
Courses are required to use the updated curriculum labeled either CTQ2000 or TQ. Those wish to sell 24 hour coverage, which is also known as combined group and workers compensation packages must take a special 4 hour course to do so. This course must be completed before sale of the insurance can begin.
Agents may carry over education credits from a previous period, but may accrue no more than 25 hours if licensed less than 4 years. These credits may only be carried over 1 12 month period. After 4 years, an agent may carryover a total of no more than 30 hours. Only credits earned in the second year of the biannual period may be carried over. The same course may not be taken within a two year period.
Some of the agents that are exempt from these requirements include agents who are 70 and older and have upheld a license in good standing for at least 30 years. These agents are still required to take specialty credit fulfillment requirements such as Partnership LTC. None residents are also exempt but are still help to the specialty requirements mentioned earlier.
The general requirements that must be met are 30 hours of insurance continuing education credits every 2 years if the agent has been licensed for over 4. If the agent has been licensed under 4 years, they must take 25 hours of CE every year. An agent selling only personal insurance is only required to take 20 hours of CE. Bail agents are only required to complete a single 6 hour course. The course must be administered within a classroom.
